"Emotional connection" cords are apparently attached to the one person by another person who fears a loss of relationship. The attachment occurs unconsciously, so the conscious mind is normally unaware of the cord attachment.
"External control" cords are attached by the sustained conscious intent of one person to control another. Even here the person who attaches the cord might be aware only of a strong need to control the other person and quite unaware that a cord of control has been attached.
